Katlyn (Katie) Garner, LCSWTherapist
She/Her/Hers |
Katie (she/her/hers) has called the Evansville area "home" since moving here in 2008 to attend University of Evansville. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice, Katie began working with at-risk youth and families in a number of different capacities. Katie eventually returned to school and received her Master of Social Work degree from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in 2018; she started her career as a child and adolescent therapist immediately thereafter.
Katie currently provides individual therapy to children ages 4-17 to address difficulties with depression, anxiety, anger, acute and complex trauma, dysregulated mood and behavior, self-esteem, sexual/gender identity, divorce, grief, military deployment, and other life transitions. Katie has extensive experience working with children and families involved with DCS and juvenile probation, adolescents experiencing recurrent suicidal ideation and self-injurious behavior, and neurodivergent youth. Katie's primary modalities of treatment include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
Katie is most passionate about giving LGBTQIA+ youth a safe, affirming space to help them discover and embrace their most authentic selves, as well as increasing the amount of support they receive from their families, school, and communities. Katie is in the final steps of becoming a Certified Mental Health Provider with the World Professional Association of Transgender Health. Over the past several years, Katie has also provided professional trainings and consultation to local organizations and agencies, mental health professionals, educators, parents/caregivers, healthcare providers, and legal entities on how to best affirm and support LGBTQIA+ youth and adults. If you are interested in having Katie provide her training to your agency or organization, please contact our office.
Outside of work, Katie serves as the current President on the Board of Directors for Greater Evansville Youth; you can also catch her helping out as a youth leader at their weekly meetings! She also enjoys reading, spending time with her (way too many) animals, taking deep dives into genealogical research, and playing The Sims 4.
